The Chinese Mission Held a Theme Event on "China, Green and Future"


On 9th June, the Permanent Mission of the People's Republic of China to the UN Office at Geneva and Other International Organizations in Switzerland, together with the China Meteorological Administration and the Group on Earth Observation (GEO) Secretariat, hosted a theme event on "China, Green and Future", which demonstrated China's green policy and practices, discussed the idea of sustainable development and future low-carbon technology and market, introduced the Green EXPO Theme Forum to be held soon in July, and briefed on the GEO Beijing Ministerial Summit in November 2010. About 300 representatives from World Meteorological Organization, the European Office of the UNEP, GEO, environmental conventions secretariats as well as Ambassadors or representatives from Missions in Geneva attended the event. H.E. Ambassador He Yafei, the Permanent Representative of the Chinese Mission, H.E. Dr. ZhengGuoguang, the Administrator of the China Meteorological Administration and Co-Chair of the GEO, H.E. Mr. Michel Jarraud, the Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization and H.E. Professor Jose Achache, the Director of the GEO Secretariat attended or addressed the event.


Ambassador He said, in the post-crisis era, while working hard on tackling the deep-rooted causes of financial crisis, the international community has adopted forward-looking attitude toward green and sustainable development. As China's economic structure faces both challenges and new opportunities, adjusting the economic structure is key to transforming the growth pattern and achieving sustainable development. The Chinese Government will strengthen the cooperation with all the parties and be ready to make more contribution to the global sustainable development.

Ambassador He said, since its establishment, the GEO has been playing a constructive role in promoting the development of Geoscience while contributing a lot to the international cooperation in addressing climate change, conserving bio-diversity and promoting MDGs. Ambassador He said China has made great progress in earth observation and will continue to work with all parties to ensure the GEO Beijing Ministerial Summit is a success.

Ambassador He also briefed the participants on the theme forum entitled "Environmental Changes and Urban Responsibilities", to be held in July during the Shanghai Expo, which will showcase the Chinese commitments toward environmental protection and sustainable development.


H.E. Dr. Zheng Guoguang briefed on the preparation work of the GEO Beijing Ministerial Summit. He pointed out that the Beijing Ministerial Summit would stocktake the achievements of the GEO in the past 5 years and offer policy recommendations for GEO's future priority areas. He said there would also be a series of side events such as exhibitions during the summit. He called upon all parties concerned to participate in the Beijing Ministerial Summit and made greater efforts for global environmental protection.

H.E. Professor Jose Achache introduced the prioritized areas of the organization and called for more support from the GEO community for the Beijing Ministerial Summit.
