Xi Jinping Meets with Iowa's Lieutenant Governor Reynolds
2012/03/19

On March 19, 2012, Vice President Xi Jinping met in the Great Hall of the People with visiting Lieutenant Governor of Iowa Kim Reynolds.

Xi extended welcome to the friends of Iowa, the US. He expressed gratitude again for the warm reception he received in Des Moines and Muscatine, Iowa during his visit to the US last month. He learned one thing clearly during his visit: the friendship between China and the US and between the two peoples enjoy a solid foundation and promising prospects; the US people have sincere friendship with the Chinese people and the US society has strong desire to cooperate with China. He was deeply impressed by the US friends who said that friendship matters the most and only a world filled with friendship can be said as a peaceful world.

He noted that the development of China-US relations at present enjoys a sound momentum. President Hu Jintao and President Obama reached consensus on jointly building the China-US cooperative partnership based on mutual respect and mutual benefit in 2011 and pointed out the direction of bilateral relations in the new era. His visit aimed at implementing the consensus. After his visit, the two sides have worked very closely and actively in this regard. The long-term, healthy and stable development of China-US relations requires the relentless efforts of both sides. No matter under what circumstances and no matter faced with what challenges, the two sides should bear in mind the fundamental interests of their people, be committed to the consensus reached between the two heads of state, strengthen dialogue and mutual trust, expand cooperation, remove interferences and ensure the progress of bilateral ties on a healthy track.

He indicated that regional cooperation is a major component and bright spot of China-US relations and has bright prospects. In the next stage, the two sides should focus on the long-term mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation, size up the situation, make best use of existing mechanisms and platforms, give full play to the regional advantages, adhere to the principle of mutual benefit and raise the bilateral regional cooperation to higher levels and benefit the two peoples within the framework of boosting China-US cooperative partnership.

On behalf of the Iowa people, Reynolds first of all extended warm congratulations on the complete success of Xi's visit to the US last month and thanked him for especially visiting Iowa during his stay in the US. She said that Xi met with his old friends in Iowa again 27 years later, attended the US-China High Level Agricultural Symposium, witnessed the signing of bilateral agricultural cooperation MOU and visited the local farmers, which made the state of Iowa and the American people feel very encouraged. Iowa would take the opportunity of Xi's visit to further deepen the bilateral cooperation and make new contributions to the development of US-China cooperative partnership.

Agricultural Minister Han Changfu, Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Zhijun and President of the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries Li Xiaolin were present at the meeting.
