The Chinese Consulate General in Odessa Holds the Opening Ceremony

On Nov. 29, 2011, the opening ceremony for the Chinese Consulate General in Odessa was held in the Ukrainian city of Odessa in a joyous and happy sound of music. Vice Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping, Chinese Ambassador to Ukraine Zhang Xiyun, Chinese Consul General in Odessa Wu Xiaoying, Director-General of the Fourth Territorial Directorate General of the MFA of Ukraine Igor Poliha, Governor of Odessa Region Eduard Matvijchuk, Deputy Chairman of the Odessa Regional Council Nikolai Tindyuk, Vice-Mayor of Odessa Sergey Chernenko, Mayor of Nikolaev Vladimir Chayka, Kherson Mayor Volodymyr Saldo, and Representative of MFA of Ukraine in Odessa Konstantin Rzhepishevskyy delivered speeches respectively. There were about 100 participants attending the ceremony including representatives from political, business, cultural and media communities as well as representatives from Chinese-funded institutions, overseas Chinese and Chinese students in Ukraine.

Vice Foreign Minister Cheng Guoping, representing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, extended warm congratulations on the opening of the Chinese Consulate General in Odessa and expressed sincere appreciations to the Ukrainian governments at all levels, friends from different communities and overseas Chinese travelling to Ukraine for their warm care and strong support. He also thanked Consul General Wu Xiaoying and all the staff in the Consulate General for their tremendous efforts for the construction of the Consulate General.

In his address, Cheng Guoping said that the opening of the Consulate General coincides with the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries and therefore has a special significance. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties 20 years ago, the bilateral relationship has been growing in a stable and healthy fashion, the mutual political trust has been increasing, the pragmatic cooperation has been deepening and expanding, and the cultural and people-to-people exchanges have become increasingly active. This year, President Hu made a successful state visit to Ukraine. The bilateral relationship was upgraded to the level of strategic partnership and entered a new stage of development. It has epoch-making significance. China sincerely hoped that China and Ukraine could become each other's trustworthy friends and reliable partners. He also expressed his firm belief that the bilateral cooperation in various fields enjoys broader and brighter prospects. He also hoped that Ukrainian friends could take the Consulate General of China in Odessa as a window to understand China, visit the Consulate General often and continue to provide care and support for the Consulate General.

The Ukrainian side extended warm congratulations on the formal opening of the Consulate General, which could enhance the friendly exchanges and pragmatic cooperation between the two countries. They also spoke highly of the rapid development of bilateral relations and the close cultural and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries. They hoped that the two sides could take the opening of the Consulate General as an opportunity to further strengthen cooperation in economy, trade, culture, science, technology, education and other fields. They also expressed their best wishes to the Consulate General for greater achievements.
