On September 7, 2010, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met with Lawrence Summers, Director of the White House National Economic Council, and Thomas Donilon, Deputy Assistant to the U.S. President for National Security Affairs.
Wen said building a positive, cooperative and comprehensive China-U.S. relationship for the 21st century is a strategic direction set by the heads of state of the two countries, and it is in the fundamental interests of the two countries and is consistent with the requirements of our times for progress. "Dialogue and cooperation are at the heart of Sino-U.S. relations, and the scale and influence of them are unprecedented," he said. Both sides should cherish the hard-won outcome, grasp the overall situation, seize the opportunity, overcome interference and move forward unswervingly, Wen added.
Wen proposed the two countries deepen political trust, respect the other's core interests, not interfere in the other's internal affairs and not take the other as an adversary in order to develop China-U.S. relations. Both sides should also promote their respective development as well as world peace and prosperity through enhanced bilateral and multilateral cooperation. Wen also urged both sides to consolidate the foundation of public support and create a positive atmosphere of tolerance, friendship and harmony.
The essential task of the two countries at present is to overcome difficulties and impacts brought about by the global financial crisis and contribute to a steady recovery of global economy, Wen said. "China and the U.S. should work together to properly deal with problems and consolidate the foundation for a better relationship in future," he said.
The U.S. officials told Wen that the two countries have conducted sound cooperation on a range of major issues in recent years. The Obama administration valued relations with China because the two countries share common interests and the ties will greatly influence the world's future, they noted. The United States is firmly committed to developing the positive, cooperative and comprehensive U.S.-China relationship for the 21st century. The U.S. is ready to promote high-level contacts and frank talks with China, deepen strategic trust and cooperation, and properly handle any problems so as to push bilateral ties for new progress. The U.S. officials also reaffirmed that the United States will continue to adhere to the one-China policy.
Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi and Minister of Finance Xie Xuren were present at the meeting.
