Hu Jintao Meets with U.S. Secretary of State Clinton and Treasury Secretary Geithner
2010/05/25

On the afternoon of May 25, 2010, Chinese President Hu Jintao met at the Great Hall of the People with the special representatives of U.S. President Barack Obama, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, who are here in Beijing for the second China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue.

President Hu fully acknowledged the positive outcome at the second China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue and made positive comments on the important role that the mechanism of China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue has played in increasing strategic mutual trust and cooperation between the two countries. Hu hoped that both sides will seriously implement the achievements of the two rounds of dialogue, draw on their experience, and strengthen the building of the mechanism so that it can be more effective and play a greater role in pushing forward China-U.S. relations.

Hu recalled his last meeting with Obama on the sidelines of a nuclear security summit in Washington in April, saying they reached important consensus. Hu said he and Obama, through their addresses to the opening session of the dialogue, elaborated on their positive attitudes to China-U.S. relations in the new period. Hu said China would like to work with the United States to keep the bilateral relationship on the right track. Hu proposed the two countries maintain friendly exchanges at high and other levels, properly address sensitive issues, strengthen substantive cooperation and seek stronger communication and coordination on international and regional hotspot issues. "We should boost economic growth, promote the sustained recovery of the world economy, maintain the sound development of bilateral trade relations and build a positive, cooperative and comprehensive relationship," Hu said.

Clinton and Geithner thanked President Hu for meeting with them. They said the initiative of President Hu and his U.S. counterpart Obama to establish the mechanism of China-U.S. Strategic and Economic Dialogue is far-sighted. The just-concluded second dialogue is of great significance. In this round of dialogue, both sides held in-depth, candid discussions on China-U.S. relations as well as issues of common concern and the dialogue helped deepen mutual understanding and cooperation between both sides. The U.S. side was glad to see the strengthening of bilateral economic ties. Clinton and Geithner said the United States stood ready to work with China to enhance dialogue and exchanges in all fields, carry out the consensus of both presidents and ensure the growth of bilateral ties.

Both sides also discussed the situation on the Korean Peninsula, the Iranian nuclear issue and other regional and international issues.

Vice Premier Wang Qishan of the State Council, State Councilor Dai Bingguo, Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, Minister of Finance Xie Xuren, Minister of the National Development and Reform Commission Zhang Ping, Minister of Commerce Chen Deming, Governor of the People's Bank of China Zhou Xiaochuan and other officials attended the meeting.
