On the morning of May 21, 2010, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with King of Sweden Carl XVI Gustaf in Diaoyutai State Guesthouse.
Hu extended welcome to Gustaf who visited China on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of China-Sweden diplomatic ties to attend related celebrations and the Swedish Pavilion Day of Shanghai World Expo. Hu said that the Chinese and the Swedish people enjoy a long history of friendly exchanges. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties 60 years ago, the two countries have maintained smooth relations with close high-level exchanges, deep economic and trade cooperation and colorful cultural exchanges. Both sides also keep close communications in the international affairs.
Hu pointed out that the two countries have no fundamental conflict of interest despite of different national conditions. China attaches importance to developing relations with Sweden and expects to make the 60th anniversary of China-Sweden diplomatic ties a new starting point of strengthening the exchanges and cooperation in all fields and raising the bilateral relations to a higher level on the basis of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit.
Gustaf said that Sweden and China enjoy a long history of friendly exchanges. Sweden is honored to be the first western country establishing diplomatic ties with China 60 years ago. He still remembers it was his grandfather that signed the document of establishing diplomatic ties with China and the first Swedish ambassador to China was received by Chairman Mao Zedong. Those are popular stories about the friendly exchanges between Sweden and China. The bilateral ties have grown continuously since the establishment of diplomatic ties. The successful visit of President Hu to Sweden in 2007 further consolidated and promoted the all-round cooperation between the two countries. During his visit to China, the two countries will jointly hold the Sweden-China Innovation Forum which will further accelerate the bilateral cooperation in emerging areas. He expressed confidence that Sweden-China friendship will enjoy another even better 60 years.
Vice Foreign Minister Wang Guangya was also present at the meeting.
