On May 19, 2010, Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych met at his presidential palace in Kiev, capital of Ukraine, with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi.
Yanukovych said that China is Ukraine's trustworthy friend and reliable partner for cooperation. Ukraine puts much emphasis on Ukraine-China relationship, the president said, stressing the relationship with China is a priority of Ukraine's foreign policy. Yanukovych noted that during his talks with Chinese President Hu Jintao on the sidelines of the Nuclear Security Summit in Washington in April, the two sides reached important consensus on how to lift the overall level of bilateral strategic relations in the new situation. "Ukraine is ready to keep closer high-level exchanges, deepen political dialogue and enhance cooperation with China in fields of aviation, aerospace, technology, agriculture, infrastructure construction and other spheres," he said. He also noted Ukraine will enhance people-to-people and cultural exchanges with China and deepen mutual understanding and friendship between both peoples. Ukraine will firmly stick to the one-China policy and welcomes a greater role to be played by China in regional and international affairs.
Yang said the Sino-Ukrainian relations have solid political, material, and social foundations. "The Chinese side understands and respects the choice of the Ukrainian people for its road of development, as well as Ukraine's domestic and foreign policies," Yang added. To further deepen China-Ukraine comprehensive friendly cooperative relationship and enrich its strategic connotation is a basic starting point of China’s policy towards Ukraine in the new situation. China is ready to work with Ukraine to look at bilateral ties from a strategic and long-term perspective, seize broader opportunities and push forward bilateral relations.
On the same day, Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov met with Yang Jiechi in the government building. Azarov said both countries should tap their respective advantages and potential in economic complementarity to upgrade bilateral pragmatic cooperation. Yang urged both sides to make best use of economic, trade, scientific, technological and aerospace cooperation committees and other mechanisms, facilitate trade exchanges, steadily advance cooperation on large projects, enhance high and new tech exchanges and promote business cooperation.
On the same day, Ukraine's Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn met with Yang Jiechi in the parliament building. Lytvyn made positive comments on exchanges between legislative bodies of the two countries, saying that Ukraine’s parliament will actively push for all-round development of Ukraine-China relations. Yang said that China hopes to continuously enhance cooperation between the parliaments of the two countries and consolidate the social basis of bilateral friendly cooperative relations.
