The Chinese delegation would like to welcome His Excellency, Minister Samarasinghe who is leading the delegation of Sri Lanka for the Review. It fully demonstrates the importance the government of Sri Lanka attaches to the Review.
China would like to extend its congratulation on and appreciation of the major achievements made in Sri Lanka in social and economic development and in national reconciliation. We have taken note of the fact that Sri Lanka has enacted the National Action Plan for the Protection and Promotion of Human Rights, and is actively engaged in the implementation of the recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission, and has made positive progress in resettling IDPs and recovering the economy in areas affected by conflicts. Furthermore, the government has made remarkable headway in poverty alleviation and in the development of education and health care.
China calls on the international community to recognize the specific conditions and difficulties facing Sri Lanka and to give the country adequate time, space and constructive support for its national reconciliation.
China recommends that the government of Sri Lanka remain committed to sustainable economic and social development and further promote national reconciliation and achieve the stability and development of the country.
