2004/04/16
Q: US President Bush commented on China's situation of democracy and freedom on November 6 when he was delivering a speech on democracy. What is your comment on it?
A: The Chinese Government has always committed itself to promoting and protecting democracy, human rights and the fundamental freedom of all Chinese, and has achieved remarkable progress which has won worldwide attention. Since China launched its reform and opening-up drive 25 years ago, the overall living standard of the Chinese people has reached the better-off level. The nation's efforts to build democratic and legal systems have been carried forward and Chinese people's freedom and rights are protected by law. The Chinese people know best how to cherish and develop socialist democracy which best suits the condition of China, and will continue to march on unswervingly under the leadership of the Communist Party of China.
