Remarks by H.E. Ambassador MA Zhaoxu at the Reception Marking the 67th Anniversary of the Founding of the People's Republic of China and Commemorating the 45th Anniversary of the Restoration of the Lawful Seat of China in the UN
2016/09/30

Excellencies,

Distinguished guests,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good evening. On behalf of Ambassador Yu and Ambassador Fu, I would like to thank you for coming to the Reception.

Since we are all here tonight, please allow me to take this opportunity to update you what is happening in China and where we are going.

This year marks the 67th anniversary of the the founding of the People's Republic of China. For a country with more than 5,000 years of civilization, 67 years may be just a short span of time. However, the past few decades witnessed remarkable progress that we have achieved. China has become the world's second largest economy with a per capita GDP of 8,000 US dollars. Since 1979, we have lifted over 700 million people out of poverty, accounting for 70% of the world’s total. The remaining 57 million poor people in the countryside will be out of poverty by 2020.

Against the backdrop of a sluggish world economy, we have attained a 6.7% growth rate in the first half of this year, contributing 25% to global economic growth. We are determined to maintain a medium-high growth and deliver more opportunities to the world.

Meanwhile, we are fully aware that China is still a developing country facing mounting difficulties and challenges. To achieve modernization, there is still a long way to go for us.

We are going to build a well-off society in an all-round way by 2020, laying the foundation for a prosperous, democratic, modern and harmonious socialist country that promises a better life for all Chinese citizens. We have every confidence in achieving that objective.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

On October 25, 1971, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758 at its 26th Session by an overwhelming majority. That resolution restored China's legitimate seat in the United Nations.

In the past 45 years, as a responsible member of the international community, China has committed itself to world peace and development. We have worked hard to safeguard the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and fulfill our international obligations.

Among the P5, China is the largest troop-contributing country to UN peace keeping missions worldwide. The Chinese peacekeepers sacrificed their lives for UN mission in conflict regions.

China takes the lead in realizing the UN Millennium Development Goals. We have ratified and released the National Plan for the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. We have signed and ratified the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.

Last year, President Xi Jinping announced at the UN General Assembly to establish a 10-year, 1 billion US dollars China-UN peace and development fund. We pledged to provide more humanitarian assistance on refugees and migrants. These measures demonstrate our determination to advance international cooperation and address global challenges together with the international community.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

No long ago, the G20 Hangzhou Summit was held with great success. The summit symbolizes a new start for world economy and for China’s interactions with the world.

China’s development has benefited from international cooperation. It also provides more public goods to the world. The "Belt and Road Initiative" proposed by President Xi Jinping is intended to share China's development opportunities with other countries and to achieve common prosperity. So far, more than 100 countries and international organizations have participated. We are glad to see the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank has been put into operation. As China grows, we will make even more contributions to the world.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The 1.3 billion people in China are striving for the realization of the Chinese dream. We are firmly committed to peaceful development, and will work with all the friends and partners in the world for our shared future.

Six months ago, I arrived in Geneva to assume my mission as Permanent Representative of China. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all of you for your valuable help and cooperation. I hope and believe that we will work together and make more achievement in our common course.

Thank you!
