Remarks by Ambassador Qiao Zonghuai at WMO Award Ceremony (June 13, 2001, Geneva)
2004/04/19
Your Excellency Secretary General Obasi, Mr. President, Mme Gerbier, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today, I am greatly honored to be invited to attend the awarding ceremony of the WMO Norbert Gerbier-MUMM International Award.

First of all, please allow me to convey sincere congratulations to Dr. Lu and Dr. Chen, the winners of the Award.

Since the Executive Council of WMO decided to establish this award in 1987, it is the first time that the Chinese win the award. It is the pride not only of the Chinese meteorological workers, but also of the Chinese people. It shows that China's meteorological research and service has already merged into the main stream of global meteorological research and service and has reached the world's advanced level.

Meteorological research and service plays a very important role in promoting agricultural production, economic construction and social development of all countries, and it is also significant to the human survival and health. China is vast in territory and has very complex meteorological phenomenon. To do a good job in meteorological research, weather forecast and disaster forecast will bring great economic benefits and influences not only for China, but also for many other countries in the world. The Chinese government has always attached great importance to meteorological research and service. China held National Conference on the Innovation of Meteorological Technology in 1999, which symbolized that China's meteorological research and technological innovation has entered a new era.

The Chinese government also attaches great importance to its cooperation with WMO. China is ready to cooperate with all countries in the framework of WMO Global meteorological research cooperation program and make its own contribution to the world meteorological research and global meteorological services.

On behalf of the Chinese government and all Chinese meteorological workers, I would like to thank Mrs. Guiar-Gerbier, Secretary General Obasi and the WMO Executive Council for their great efforts in developing the prosperity of world meteorological research and promoting global meteorological cooperation and services. The establishment of Norbert Gerbier-MUMM Award is an encouragement to scientific researchers. It will certainly promote the progress and development of world meteorological research and service.

Thank you!
