Remarks by H.E. Ambassador LI Baodong at the Opening of The Charm of Macao Photo Exhibition
2009/11/26

Mr. Director General Sergei Ordzhonikidze,

Excellencies and Friends,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good evening. On behalf of the Permanent Mission of China to the UN Office at Geneva, I welcome you all to the opening of the photo exhibition entitled The Charm of Macao, to be followed by a Chinese Wushu performance at the Assembly Hall later this evening.

First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Director-General for his high patronage of these two events, and the Cultural Activities Committee of the UN office, headed by Mr. Pierre LE LOARER, for its excellent work and kind assistance in arranging today's events.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

For centuries, Macao has been a center for the fusion of Eastern and Western cultures. Its diverse lifestyles and cultural variety exert a powerful and unique charm.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Macao's reunification with China and the establishment of the Macao Special Administrative Region. During the past 10 years, the Chinese Government has been following the policies of "one country, two systems" and "Macao administrated by the people of Macao". The region enjoys a high degree of autonomy, its unique culture and way of life kept intact and in full flourish.

The Charm of Macao Photo Exhibition has recorded Macao's continuing prosperity and stability since its reunification with China on December 20, 1999. From the graceful photos, you will find a charming Macao, a city of deep tranquility and dynamic energy, steeped in tradition and buzzing with modernity.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

The exhibition will be shown for the next a couple of weeks in the Palais des Nations. We hope that it will bring to the delegates, staff and visitors of the UN the special appeal of Macao, and add to the rich diversity of the cultural program of the UN Office at Geneva, which all of us are very proud of.

In conclusion, I would like to remind you that there will be a Chinese Wushu Performance following this reception. I wish you a very pleasant evening.

Thank you.
