Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hong Lei's Remarks on Efforts Made to Establish Whether There Was Any Chinese Citizen on Board Malaysia Airlines Flight MH 17

Q: Malaysia Airlines Flight MH 17 crashed in the eastern part of Ukraine. Was there any Chinese citizen on board the plane?

A: The Chinese Foreign Ministry activated the emergency response mechanism upon learning the incident and immediately directed Chinese Embassies in the Netherlands, Malaysia, Ukraine and Russia as well the Chinese Consulate General in Odessa to manage to obtain information about whether there was any Chinese citizen on board the crashed plane. It has been corroborated that a Hong Kong resident was among the passengers.

The Foreign Ministry will stay in close communication with the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to properly deal with related issues. We will continue to monitor closely the situation.
