A series of cultural events themed Culture of China - Splendid Sichuan winds down on 22 July at the Palais des Nations, attracting thousands of visitors around the world.
The series, composed of a photo exhibition and a spectacle evening, is co-organized by Permanent Mission of China, Sichuan Provincial Government, United Nations Office at Geneva, Overseas Chinese Affairs Office and Information Office of Chinese State Council. The events commemorate the completion of post-disaster reconstruction of Wenchuan Earthquake in Sichuan in 2008, and pay tribute to the international community represented in Geneva for its generous support in the rescue, relief and reconstruction efforts.
The series opened at the Assembly Hall on 5 July, with over 2000 diplomats, UN staff, representatives of international organizations and local residents of Geneva.
In his opening remarks, Ambassador He Yafei, Permanent Representative of China described the event as "a night of culture, commemoration, and appreciation", highlighting Chinese people's gratitude to the international community.
Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Director-General of the UNOG, speaking in both Chinese and English, said that the series "highlights the culture of China and one of its most historic and scenic provinces", and "commemorates the strength and determination of the Chinese people to rebuild their lives after this devastating event and strong belief for the future of the nation".
A group of top artists from Sichuan brought to the audience masterpieces of Chinese folk art and ethnic cultures, including magical face-change stunts, traditional dances and breathtaking acrobatics.
A photo exhibition was on display from 5 to 22 July, themed "Splendid Sichuan" and "Through Disaster" at the Palais des Nations.
Visitors to and audience of the events expressed their admiration for the courage and achievements of the people of Sichuan in the wake of the disaster.

On 12 May 2008, Wenchuan County of Sichuan Province was devastated by a massive earthquake, which caused great casualties and severe damages. In the wake of the disaster, the people of Sichuan stood up strongly and bravely. With helping hands from across the nation and all over the world, the courageous people of Sichuan turned the rubble into a beautiful and vibrant new hometown in three years.
