UNITAR Executive Director Carlos Lopes visits China

UNITAR Executive Director and UN Assistant Secretary-General Carlos Lopes visited China from 17-20 June 2009. The official visit, the first to China by Mr. Lopes in his capacity as UNITAR Executive Director, was at the invitation of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Mr. Lopes met in Beijing with the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. He Yafei; Director of the Counselor's Office of the State Council, Mr. Chen Jinyu; Vice-President of the China Foreign Affairs University, Mr. Heng Xiaojun; and other activities organized by the United Nations Association – China. In Shanghai, Mr. Lopes commenced his visit at Fudan University, where he gave a speech entitled "Are we listening? Identities facing a deep multi-faceted global crisis" before some 600 students and faculty. Mr. Lopes also visited the associated training centre CIFAL Shanghai. CIFAL Shanghai has been set up in 2003 in cooperation with Shanghai Municipal Commission on Economy and Information Technology to support the participation of local authorities in the World Summit on the Information Society and the implementation of local digital agendas.
