Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei Attends the Five Nuclear States' Conference on Nuclear Disarmament Trust Building Measures

China, U.S., Russia, U.K. and France held the conference on nuclear disarmament trust building measures in London from September 3 to 4, 2009. The Chinese delegation headed by Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei attended the conference.

The participants mainly discussed the trust-building measures on nuclear disarmament and how to cope with the challenges of nonproliferation. Government officials and experts of the five countries introduced the measures of information exchange and voluntary transparency they have taken respectively and exchanged opinions on strengthening the strategic stability and building mutual trust.

He Yafei elaborated China's policy proposition and active measures on nuclear disarmament. He stressed that the nuclear weapons must be prohibited completely and destroyed thoroughly, the nuclear disarmament process must be advanced substantively, the risk of proliferation of nuclear weapons must be eliminated and the peaceful use of and international cooperation on nuclear energy must be promoted. China is willing to make concerted efforts with all the parties concerned to push for positive results of the Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and continue to make contributions to boosting the process of nuclear disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation.

During the conference, He met with U.S. Under Secretary of State Ellen Tauscher and Director General of Defence and Intelligence of the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) Mariot Leslie respectively. The two sides exchanged views on issues of common concern.
