The Human Rights Treaty Bodies

The human rights treaty bodies are committees of independent experts that monitor implementation of the core international human rights treaties. Currently, there are nine human rights international treaties, from which 10 treaty bodies have been established. They are Human Rights Committee (CCPR) that monitors implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) that monitors implementation of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) that monitors implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) that monitors implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, Committee against Torture (CAT) that monitors implementation of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment and the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (SPT), Committee on the Rights of the Child (CRC) that monitors implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, Committee on Migrant Workers (CMW) that monitors implementation of the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families, Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) that monitors implementation of the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and Committee on Enforced Disappearances (CED) that monitors implementation of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance. The treaty bodies perform a number of functions, including consideration of State parties' periodic reports and publishing concluding observations; make general comments interpreting treaty provisions.
