【Objectives】To promote the establishment of networks of observational stations and international cooperation and to provide weather, climate and water-related data. To promote the application of science and technology in meteorology and hydrology to aviation, water resource management, agriculture and other focus areas. To coordinate research and training in meteorology and related fields.
【Head of the Organization】 Gerhard Adrian was elected as the President of WMO in 2019 for a four-year term until 2023. Petteri Taalas was reelected as the Secretary-General of WMO in 2019 for his second four-year term until 2023.

【Organizations】The World Meteorological Congress is the supreme body of WMO and the Congress meets in regular session every four years. WMO also has the Executive Council, Regional Associations, Technical Commissions and the Secretariat.
【Major Activities】As a specialized agency of the United Nations, WMO is dedicated to international cooperation and coordination on weather, climate, and water resources. In addition to meteorological observation and research, WMO implements various programs around the world, involving agricultural production, reconstruction after the disaster, water resources development, fight against drought, etc.
【China’s Relationship with WMO】China joined the WMO in 1972. Hong Kong SAR of China and Macao SAR of China are regional members. China has been a member of the WMO Executive Council since 1973. China has good relations with WMO. Previous WMO presidents, Secretary-General and senior officials have visited China many times and been received by Chinese leaders. Director Liu Yaming of the China Meteorological Administration led a delegation to attend the 18th World Meteorological Congress in 2019, in Geneva, and was re-elected as a member of the Executive Council at the 71st session of the WMO Executive Council held at the same time.
