【Establishment】Established in 1951, the European Intergovernmental Committee on Migration Issues was established, and in 1989 it was changed to its current name. In 2016, it became a related organization of the United Nations.

【Objectives】To ensure the orderly flow of immigrants throughout the world, and assist relevant countries to deal with immigration issues.

【Members】173 members, 8 observer countries.

【Organization】 Mainly the council and its secretariat.

【Headquarters】 Geneva, Switzerland.

【Head of the Organization】Director-General Antonio Vitorino (Portuguese), took office on October 1, 2018 for a term of 5 years.

【China’s Relationship with IOM】China became an observer country of the International Organization for Migration in June 2001, and then attended all the Council meetings of the Organization. From December 2007 to June 2010, China cooperated with the International Organization for Migration to launch a project on capacity building for China immigration management. From April 2011 to December 2014, the two sides cooperated in the second phase of China's immigration management capacity building project. In April 2015, the two sides launched a project to support the dialogue between China and Europe on personnel exchanges and immigration. On June 30, 2016, China officially joined the IOM during its Special Council.
